The Butterfly Nature Trail (2014 LGAA)

Village of Macedon
County: Wayne County
Population: Less than 5,000
Village Hall: (315) 986-3976

The Village of Macedon's Butterfly Nature Trail was developed as a destination point for the community and for its visitors.  This accessible, healthy place offers affordable family time, acts as an educational vehicle and a natural place where people with different types of disabilities may enjoy the nature therapy trail, learn about nature and history, and and interact with nature.

The Village has received signage to promote the Butterfly Nature Trail. The Canal corridor is well traveled by many and the signage now brings bikers and boaters from the trail to the Village Main Street shops, creating a newly improved energy on Main Street.

This project has resulted in both cost and time savings for the Village because of the grassroots efforts. Organizers were able to have local businesses volunteer their manpower and equipment, recruit volunteers, and have strong fundraising efforts. This effort saved the municipality/taxpayers approximately $44,100.

Macedon Village Pride Committee, Butterfly Nature Trail Volunteers, Lock 60 Volunteers, Trail Works, Inc., Macedon Trails Committee, Cornell Cooperative Extension, Applied Ecological Services, Lyons Trail of Hope and REB Woodworking were all the partnerships
