Since civic education is the foundation of an active and informed citizenry, NYCOM has developed two programs to aid local leaders in teaching students about local government in New York and to assist educators in meeting the state's civics standards.
The programs are designed to foster strong civic and community pride at two levels of New York State's education curriculum:
Third Grade Program (Visiting Classroom)
Eighth Grade Program (If I Were Mayor, I Would... Essay Contest)
* Please note that the Fifth Grade Municipal Bulletin Cover Contest has been discontinued. Thank you to all of the talented and civic-minded students that participated in this program. NYCOM remains committed to working with educators and local officials to encourage student engagement in the community and in local government.
