"Life's a Beach in New York State" | Municipal Bulletin | Summer 2012
As summer approaches some of us head to the beach to keep cool. Luckily, here in New York State you don’t have to travel too far to find some of the country’s best beaches. Recently, two New York State beaches earned themselves the titles of ‘America’s Best Beaches of 2012’ and ‘Best Restored Beach in the Nation’...
The Village of East Hampton, home to Main Beach, was revealed as one of the top three beaches in the United States for 2012. The annual list, which Stephen Leatherman, aka "Dr. Beach" has compiled since 1991, is based on 50 criteria, ranging from natural conditions (sand softness, water temperature, wave size) to human-related factors (i.e., noise, trash or public safety).
The Village of West Hampton Dunes recently won the title of best restored beach in the nation in an ASPBA contest that celebrates past winners of it's annual Best Restored Beaches Across America contest, which West Hampton Dunes won three years ago.
Mayor Gary Vegliante of the Village of West Hampton Dunes says the win also shows how hard the village has worked to improve its beaches, which he said where some of the worst around following a devastating storm in 1992 that put Pikes Beach and 190 homes completely under water.
